When I power up my new ademco 20p panel the 6160 keypad display remains blank but illuminates. The keys beep but there is no text displayed.

Power up the panel and press the 1 and 3 keys together within 45 seconds of power up. This will display the keypad address, which is probably set to 31, the default for panels with non-addressable keypad. If this is the first keypad on the 20p, it should be changed to 16. addition keypads may be set 17-23.

Hi, I live in an older house but would like to install or have an alarm installed. How easy or how difficult would it be to do this as a homeowner. I have a small child and would like to have a system that would also let me know if he left the house. Is that possible?

Depending on the system and the degree of protection you would want it to provide the installation could range from easy to very difficult. A wireless system would be easier for your average homeowner to install, but costs are higher. If you want a monitored system, sometimes you can save money on install packages from national alarm companies, if you agree to a monitoring contract for a certain period. It is very important to consider all the details of the system and the installation to acurately evaluate the cost and the degree of difficulty, if you do it yourself. The website listed below has an abundance of information on this subject and should be very helpful in making a decision. You can also get a good idea of the costs of the hardware, I have found there prices competitive in the past. They also have an extensive library of technical info including manuals and installation tips.

Most panels have standard door chime options as well as "stay" alarm settings, both of which are usefull to track someone (you small child) entering and leaving the house.
