I would like to add an intercom to my house and I was told by the builder that it was prewired for an intercom system. I have shopped around a little and have found a lot of wireless systems for sale, but I would like to use a wired system if it is possible. I am never happy with my wireless phone signal and I would like the intercom to be reliable. My mother has limited mobility and will depend on the intercom a lot. I have found some wired systems, but I dont really understand the specifications. Here is what I have found for prewire. 2 shielded cables with 10 colored wires. Both of these run back to a box in the bedroom where the main controller will go (i assume). These go to outlet boxes, one in the kitchen and 1 in the office. There is also a cable with 2 small gauge wires and a bare wire which goes to the fron door. I think I have what I need for 3 main units and a door unit. Can anyone tell me if this is the case? Any recomendations for hardware? thanks

do you want an intercom for sound only or would you like video built in as well. It sounds like you have wiring in place for either option. Some people choose audio only for the stations inside the house and video for the doors.

I only need it for sound. I have security cameras at the doors.

the wired intercom system i usually recomend is Aiphone. They have a wide variety of options and their products are used extensively in commercial and residential applications. For your inside stations i would use the Aiphone LEF-3C. this model will work with your present wiring and has a 4 station capacity. for your door i would use the Aiphone LE-D. this is a door station and has a single push button to buzz the inside stations. You will also need a power supply,Aiphone PS-1225UL. You should check your main box in the bedroom to see if you have another wire for your power supply. this is usually 2 or 3 conductor cable running from main box back to near a power outlet somewhere. You dont have to use this model and brand, but you can check them out and get a better idea about the specs and what you need.

i found another 2 wire w/ground cable from the main bedroom box to the side entry door. I also found the power supply cable in the main box and the other end in a box near an outlet in my utility room. i looked at those aiphone components and i think thats what i need, im going to shop around now that i know what im looking for. can this setup run the station for the second entry door?

yes, just connect it to the same terminals on the main station as the other entry door. you will not be able to identify which door the visitor is at when they press the button though. Your other option is upgrade to units capable of connecting to more stations, but the costs go up considerably.
